<--Back Dear Rugby Buddha, What's the difference between skinny and fat buddha? Why is there a fat buddha? Gerry Well Gerry, The answer to that is simple. Skinny and Fat Buddha are representative of the Rugby career of Buddha and act as a metaphor for life. Skinny Buddha represents young, inexperienced and not so wise Buddha. In the early stages of his career, skinny Buddha was a Back. As he grew older and wiser he came to have a broader understanding of rugby (life). In doing so he realized that the key to rugby was not speed or ball handling or even running or tackling. Buddha came to be self aware through his understanding of rugby as a metaphysical exercise in judgment and decision making. With self awareness, Buddha realized that by thinking he could achieve more success in rugby than through mere physical effort. So, as he began to master rugby, he needed to exert less and less physical effort. As a result he began to gain weight. As he did so, he moved from Wing to Center and finally to the pack. The pack brought young Buddha new challenges as it's members were equally as wise and weighty. At first young Buddha was tempted to fall back on physical effort to augment his exceptional understanding of the game and allow him to compete successfully with the other large and sage members of the pack. To do so would have caused him to gain even more weight as he struggled to compete. But again he looked within himself and found the answers to the questions posed by rugby play in the pack. He became one with the pack, neither fighting nor succumbing to it's terrible and violent force. He became the center of the Pack and thus the center of the game. He became the hooker. At once diminutive among the giants of the pack, he was a rock unyielding to the wind that was the backs. He flowed within the game on ethereal currents of physical prowess and mental focus- the ying of and yang of the game, neither complete without the other. He thus stepped outside himself and truly became one with the enlighten nirvana that is rugby. Skinny Buddha represents the journey. Fat Buddha represents the destination
to which all true ruggers eventually come. |
